Professor G Douglas Tracy AO

Professor Tracy was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1926. He was foundation Professor of Surgery for the University of New South Wales at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, from 1969 until 1986. He was elected a councillor of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons from 1968 to 1981, serving as chairman of the Board of Examiners, and was president from 1979 to 1981.
He was President of the Surgical Research Society of Australasia (1968) and Chairman of the Australian New Zealand chapter of the International Cardiovascular Surgical Society.
In 1979, he was appointed by the UK Royal Colleges as Sir Arthur Sims Commonwealth Travelling Professor, lecturing in Hong Kong, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Great Britain and Ireland. He was awarded the Abraham Colles medal of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle (1963); Western Reserve University in Cleveland (1964); the University of Hong Kong where he was Leverhulme exchange professor for four months in 1973; Duke University, North Carolina, where he was Deryl Hart Lecturer in 1979; and Vanderbilt University in Nashville (1979). He is an honorary member of the American Society for Vascular Surgery.
In 1968, he was leader of a surgical team to South Vietnam for three months and later served as Colonel RAAMC Reserve for six years.
He became an Officer in the Order of Australia in 1985 for services to surgery and was Deputy Chairman of the New South Wales Medical Board for seven years. In journal articles and book chapters, he has seventy-eight publications in the fields of vascular surgery, surgical education and history.
He is presently Emeritus Consultant Surgeon at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney and lives in Port Macquarie with his wife Nola with whom he has seven children. His hobbies and interests include golf, tennis and painting.
