He served in the Ministry of Labour until that department nominated him as its candidate in the Limited Administration Class Competition, which led, at the age of 39, to his transfer to the Foreign Office as the first in a new Head for Head Transfer Scheme.
Harold served at the British Legation—Bucharest as Third Secretary and subsequent appointments were as Second Secretary and HM Vice-Consul in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro; Superintendent of Diplomatic Bag Services at the FCO—London; Second Secretary (Administration Officer) at the British Embassy—Athens; First Secretary at the British High Commission Canberra; First Secretary at the British Embassy Ankara. In 1987, Harold was appointed First Secretary Head of Diplomatic Immunities Section, Protocol Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.
Harold has since retired and made his home in Australia, where he planted a vineyard near Canberra.
