In 1539 a group of monks hide valuable church relics in an underground tunnel in order to avoid King Henry the Eighth’s plundering henchmen.
Three hundred years later a tree, uprooted by a hot-air balloon, exposes the tunnel to two young lads. The boys’ father, curious as to the contents of the mysterious tunnel and hopeful of a profitable outcome, enlists the help of his brothers and together they discover not only boxes of church treasure, but spirits of the long-lost monks, reluctant to relinquish their caretaking duties.
The spirits play havoc with those who perceive the treasures to be a ticket to wealth, bringing about all manner of mayhem. Eventually though, the authorities are notified and realising the treasures to be an authentic and significant discovery, attempt to remove the wooden boxes of relics. However, a sudden and massive flood thwarts their efforts and the relics are once again interred with their keepers.
Time passes by and all but the monks forget the relics of Durham. In another massive flood, the ancient wooden boxes break free and float on an underground river, mystifying authorities by suddenly appearing at the gates of a concrete barrage.
The fate of the treasures is a moot point, for neither wicked plunderers, nor opportunistic thieves can shake the resolve of the monks, who have vowed with their last breaths to return the relics home
