She was fortunate enough to live with her grandparents, who were a little better off than others, and they filled her life with love and happiness.
Then, the unexpected death of Joan's grandmother changed everything. That one event set the stage for a lifetime marked by both joy and tragedy, and a life of constant self-discovery.
