Sailing Close to the Wind

I’ve always had a love of the sea and love to read a good ocean adventure. We have all heard about the pirates of Penzance and other stories of plunder and murder on the high seas. We usually relate pirate stories to days of old, but strange things happen on the oceans even now – tales of pirates are as relevant today as they were back then. The only difference now is that today’s baddies are far more sophisticated, have more up to date technology and high powered rifles as well. Ian McLaren, an Aussie author living in Tasmania, has written this grisly tale about pirates, conspiracy and murder. For added interest he has centred his story on locations such as the coast of New South Wales and Port Moresby. Michael Sinclair, captain of the Moroccan Star, has lived on the edge of honesty during his days on the ocean. While not strictly ‘dodgy’, he has sometimes sailed close to the wind. This makes him the perfect target for the brutal Max Humboldt, a man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Humboldt offers Sinclair $50,000 to make the Moroccan Star available for boarding in order to steal the cargo the ship is carrying to Port Moresby. The deal involves capturing the crew, allowing the pirates to steal what they want, and notifying the authorities of the theft. However, Sinclair is in for a surprise when Humboldt and his mates become more violent than he bargained for and he soon realizes that his life and that of his crew are worth nothing compared to the success of Humboldt’s plan. It is not long before the hunt for the Moroccan Star is begun and this is where the adventure really takes off. If you like your novels full of adventure and action, you will really enjoy this novel by a new Aussie author who has previously published short seafaring stories. ‘A book is a private companion’ – John Sailing close to the wind takes on a whole new meaning when you’re the captain of the MV Moroccan Star – be prepared for grisly ocean-going adventure of modern day pirates!
