Lessons in Life

Pick of the Week

In today’s world, there is a lot of change happening. We are all encouraged to explore our inner selves, strengthen our bodies and minds with exercise, yoga, meditation etc etc etc. Not for us the old ways when most of us had to walk to work, when we had a holiday with the rellies once a year, or came home and sat around the dinner table to discuss our day’s events. Of course, I am referring to us fortunate people who grew up in the Australia I knew as a young snapper. In today’s South America, there are millions still living in poverty, battling to earn money to feed themselves and their families. They have no luxuries and often try to illegally gain entry in to the USA to improve their lifestyle. Vijai Lakshmi was born in Guyana in South America. Her life was one of poverty in one of the poorest countries in the world. Vijai retreated into herself and realized that the power to change her life came from within – from inner self-knowledge, confidence-building and the powerful strength of her mind. Vijai has become an individual and her family has learned to accept her sometimes ‘odd’ ways. She had the courage to set her goals, ignored the consequences of her life decisions and came to know her God whom she deeply loves and reveres. It is not often you have the opportunity to read such a strong, factual book – it is a truly inspiring story as you journey with Vijai through her ups and downs. She states that the greatest gift you can give yourself is your willingness to change. There is a life lesson in this moving novel for everyone. As the author says, we need to open ourselves to new ideas – that is the only way we can truly grow as human beings.
