Biography: The author was born in Hong Kong. His father was Norwegian; his mother, who died when he was three, was Australian.
Derek received his early education in China and was sent to Australia just before Japan?s entry into World War II. There he completed his schooling.
He studied medicine at the University of Sydney. Following graduation he became a surgeon and later a radiotherapist.
