Trained initially in the hospitality sector and employed for more than twelve years in the airline industry, Kate Murray then trained as a registered nurse. This change of career was motivated by her experience of spending many long periods in hospital as a patient and appreciating the work of nurses. Kate became an advocate for those suffering from bowel diseases. Initially, she spoke at clinical workshops, with the audience comprising her peers and many senior medical staff. New avenues opened in the private sector to speak at different public forums, with direct involvement with a number of peak bodies representing people with bowel diseases.
Kate has also written articles for hospital and peak body magazines and newsletters about techniques of medical care for patients with bowel disease. Following a hiatus due to COVID-19, Kate continues her work as an advocate, underpinned by this book, Overcoming Fears and Fears: My Ostomy Story.
