Born and raised in suburban Melbourne, Michael escaped at the earliest opportunity to pursue his dream of a military career. He worked predominantly in military intelligence and his career spanned more than thirty years. During this period, he saw service in Australia and overseas, including postings in Asia, South East Asia, Africa and the Pacific region.
Michael specialised in human intelligence operations and held multiple operational, training and leadership roles within the discipline. He was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2005 for his significant and multi-faceted contribution to Australian intelligence. In post-military life, he completed both bachelor's and master's degrees as a mature aged student and worked as a public servant in Australia and New Zealand.
Michael currently resides in Canberra with his wife Kerry, his partner of forty years. They have two adult children and one grandson. He is currently self-employed and consults to government departments, non-government organisations and business entities in Australia and overseas on specialist security and intelligence applications. In addition to writing, he lists family, people, bushwalking, travel, sport and reading among his interests and hobbies.
