For fifty-seven years, Peter Dornan has been a physiotherapist in the fields of sports medicine and manipulative therapy. He has worked with many international sporting teams, including being the inaugural physiotherapist for the Australian national rugby union team, the Australian national rugby league team, the Queensland rugby union team, and the Australian cricket team.
For his achievements, he was awarded the Commemorative 2000 Australian Sports Medal. He is also a passionate men's health activist. In 1997, Peter created a forum for men and their partners to gain support and be better informed in matters relating to prostate cancer. He was influential in forming the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Peter has been freelance writing for many years and written two books on sporting injuries, one on prostate cancer (Conquering Incontinence), two on pelvic pain, and four military books (The Silent Men, an account of the Kokoda Track campaign, Nicky Barr - An Australian Air Ace, The Last Man Standing, an account of the Tobruk and El Alamein campaigns, and Diving Stations, an inspiring story of one of the most successful submarine commanders of the Second World War). In 2002, Peter was appointed a member of the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) and was the 2020 Queensland Senior Australian of the Year.
Peter has been a classical sculptor for more than forty years with works in many national institutions and private collections.
Peter is married to Dr Dimity Dornan (AO), a speech pathologist, who is the founder and director of Hear and Say, a world-wide charity which teaches babies who are deaf to listen and to speak. She is also the founder and chair of Bionics Queensland and Bionics Gamechangers Australia. They have two adult children, Melissa and Roderick.
