Rick Van Dam was born in Hiversum, Holland, one of three children, and was educated at Easter Park High School. He travelled with his family around the world, his father being a diamond cutter, and most of his work was in Africa and Indonesia. His family then emigrated to Perth Australia in 1958. Rick Van Dam then took up Guitar and started to play with bands and touring around the countryside for the next fifteen years. Rick ended up going solo as an entertainer until on one morning checking on his musical gear in his garage, he found that it was stolen. It stopped Rick dead in his tracks. The only job Rick could get was security work, which he took on. He now works for the Department of Defence and in his spare time has started writing short stories.
