As the Queen Mary sails out of Sydney Harbour in December 1940 on its journey to the Middle East, Mick stands on the deck, his eyes searching the crowded shoreline for a final glimpse of Eva’s face. Feeling a terrible emptiness, Eva watches the ship depart, unable to distinguish the familiar figure she seeks from the ribbon of khaki lining the decks.
With the war continuing to disrupt their lives, Mick writes of his experiences in foreign lands, always clinging to his dream of one day returning home safely to Eva and to a future togesther.
