When Ken Cameron, school teacher, meets ‘Sonny’ King, a talented
young Aboriginal footballer, on the long train journey to Buraweena, he little
realises that this chance encounter will lead him into a labyrinth of racial
politics and intrigue that explodes into violence when a murder at Deepwater,
a popular picnic spot with a sinister past, inflames passions that threaten to
tear the town apart. Nor could he imagine that his infatuation with the beautiful
Laura Barrington, daughter of an influential grazier, would have dangerous and
tragic consequences for himself and others.
