Riding the Rough Road is a compilation of short stories I have written over the past 15 years. They were originally written for my nephews and nieces, to sate their unquenchable curiosity about my life in the ‘Old Days’, when I was a boy.
To me, the ‘Old Days’ seem like only yesterday; but they’re over! Like the dust in a dust storm, life comes as an exciting whirly-wind and vanishes quickly. It is as if I blinked my eyes only once; so much of my life was over before I could hardly catch my breath.
Gone are the days of the great cattle drives, the long lonely stock routes, packhorses, mustering camps, tough and rugged stockman and equally rugged, tough horses. They are being replaced by noisy motorbikes and terrifying helicopters. These inventions have no time for an old stockman like me.
These stories are about my life, the unwavering love of my family, my unquenchable love of the bush, my own personal battles and my struggle for life itself. They are stories of courage, passion, fear and struggle; they tell of my dreams, achievements and happiness.
