James Voûte is an accomplished artist who has progressed from painting to illustrating, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting in 1985 at what is now Curtin University, Western Australia, then a Masters of Fine Art from the University of Tasmania.
He was educated in The Netherlands, then migrated to Australia. He then spent 15 years in Papua New Guinea and remote communities of the Northern Territory before settling in Tasmania.
