There's a solid splash of everything in this novel as the author tackles subjects such as police corruption, politics, morality, the state of the media, sexual misconduct, alcoholism, greed and personal integrity.
The main character, Tony, is a university lecturer who is merely making the motions in life ' he is no longer excited in his career or personal life. Everything is getting him down, the way the media behave for one thing, the politics at work, his predictable home life ' and then a tragedy happens that sees his world go further into a spin. A teenager is killed in a hit-and-run accident and the drunken driver calls Tony for help.
The driver has friends in high places and soon his guilt is covered up. Apart from this, Tony also has to deal with a fellow lecturer who impregnates a student and then flees the country moving to England with their female boss. The girl is left to her own fate and chooses to raise the baby back home with her father. Meanwhile, Tony's promiscuous and spineless friend finds himself in further trouble in England and asks Tony for help.
Actions and consequences, morality versus immorality, courage versus fear and weakness. This book breathes with many characters and weaves from dilemma to dilemma. There are some silver linings but life is not all strawberries and cream.
This is a well-crafted debut novel where the author has created many characters and situations with which many readers will identify.
