This novel opens with Ian Marshall discovering his wife, Kath, attempting to hang herself. Kath has been driven to despair by Ian’s obsession with his computer programming work, and also the discovery of some intimate, personal letters from the past, that he had written to Ruth, who he is still in contact with.
Ian was dating Ruth before he met Kath, eight years ago. Ruth moved away, but Ian has been in love with her for years, despite being married to Kath.
He was attracted to Kath because of her innocent views on life and married her within three months of their first meeting, egged on by the discovery that Ruth had married his best friend from school, Quentin.
Kath recovers from her attempted suicide and Ian encourages her to see a psychiatrist, although he doesn’t realize that he is pushing her further away. She has grown to despise him.
It is not long after this that their marriage breaks up and he moves into a pub to complete his work on his computer program to take his mind off his worries. Encouraged by Ruth and Quentin, he then decides to travel to Melbourne to complete further University studies in computer programming to perfect, Topsy, the computer project he is working on.
This novel follows Ian’s life as his best friend struggles for his life to fight his newly-diagnosed cancer and the knowledge that Ruth, his lost love, is having an affair.
Ian’s life is going down the drain and he will have to find inner strength and draw on all of his reserves to find himself and his place in the world.
