A country devastated by the Khmer Rouge regime was a shadow of its former self. Over twenty years, half a generation of Cambodians were assisted by scientists dedicating their professional lives to the Cambodian-IRRI-Australia-Project (CIAP). The book describes how the CIAP project contributed net worth of approximately US$40million per year from 1987 to 2003. It was a remarkable achievement. The story of Phaloeun is also a wonderful example of perseverance. In 1980 at the age of 22 she returned to complete high school, and then continued on to Russia for further study. She said she thought her brain could not learn after the rule of the Pol Pot. Determination and her teachers in Russia proved otherwise. Don Puckridge's book provides a great example of the achievements possible when combining science, investment and human endeavour.
