By Christine Perrott
Patient Fortitude is a moving and empowering story of the loved shared between a couple enduring a serious illness, and the emotions they face during a lengthy stay in public hospital. It is an inspirational account of a woman?s search for dignity for both herself and her husband through a long term hospital confinement and after a medical discharge.
Christine Perrott chronicles her experience as a full time carer for her husband Roy who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. Christine bravely recounts the distressing realities associated with the sudden hospitalisation of a loved one including housing and financial issues; dealing with insensitive healthcare professionals; and experiencing a loss of control.
Christine faces many obstacles in her quest to care for her husband from home after his hospital stay, particularly the reluctance of medical carers to release Roy to the care of his wife. With the help of assisting therapists, Roy and Christine begin the frustrating yet rewarding long term process of at-home rehabilitation.
