Mark Whitelaw has written a fine novel set in an isolated harbour town on an island off the coast of Hobart. The main character, Luke Oliver, has grown up amidst the quiet and turmoil of this seemingly sleepy region. From an idyllic childhood savouring the delights of working and fishing with his grandfather, Luke grows into a strong and charismatic man now working as a journalist. It is these research skills which equip Luke for the most important assignment of his life. For decades, the island has been infiltrated by South American mobsters. This situation has been carefully plotted and planned for years and no-one suspects a thing. But it is upon Luke’s return to the area that the mobsters’ true purpose is accidentally exposed. Luke returns to a situation which is a tinderbox - a situation that explodes with devastating effect. Those that survive, owe their lives to Luke and a few more brave souls. Mark Whitelaw has presented a carefully crafted story which is gripping from beginning to end. This first novel is a credit to any writer and a sure-fire winner.
