JOHN MORROW?S PICK OF THE WEEK THE FLIGHT OF THE RAVEN Volume 1 in Star Fire Saga SK Ashley Sid Harta I am a particular fan of science fiction/fantasy books and like nothing better than discovering new authors embarking on new sci-fi series. Therefore, I was particularly interested to read this book which is the first in a new series called Star Fire Saga. What appeals to me even more is that I love discovering work from new Australian authors, and SK Ashley just happens to be one of those. The Flight of the Raven is set in 3001, the start of a brand new millennium. In SK Ashley?s book, we humans have adapted to a new way of living after the nuclear wars which occurred in 2902. Our planet?s air is contaminated and life as they know it in 3001 is lived in enclosed cities. (I don?t know about you but I for one am glad that I won?t be around for this unhappy event if it occurs, as I love the smell of rain hitting the earth, the sharp tangy aroma of the salty ocean, and the crisp and clean scent of a pine forest. In this brave new world there are high schools, inter-galactic flying medical centres, home schools and the latest in technologies. There are also flying lions, robotic pets and powdered food which can be turned into a home-cooked meal. Ashley has based her first book in this series in the enclosed city called Star Fire where something horrible is about to affect the Travertine family. The Travertine family is made up of Dexter (Dad), Mia (Mum), Saffyre and her twin brother Zavier, Larzer and his twin sister, Omega. Dexter and Mia are professors and invent new technology, including a device which can travel through the atmosphere in seconds, via a blue laser beam. Disaster strikes when Dexter and Mia go missing after a family friend breaks a criminal out of jail. Unfortunately, Dexter and Mia were the ones responsible for the criminal being charged in the first place and their lives are seriously in danger. The Travertine children join forces with the police to find their parents before they are lost to them forever. ?If you are into science-fiction and stories about outrageously imaginative technology, you will really love this first book of a brand new series which will have you convinced that you?ve travelled into the future?.
