Memoir

Travel abroad in the 1950s ? what was it like? Why did you go? How did you get there? Who did you meet? Did it change your outlook? How did you cope without a credit card or mobile?

'Gap Year' is a recent 'buzz' term, but the phenomenon itself is far from new.

In Grandma's Gap Years, grandmother Mary Steele shows what it was all about half a century ago in this account drawn from her diaries, photos and vivid memories. It will be an eye-opener for younger readers and a nostalgic journey for older ones.Author Biography: Mary Steele grew up in country Victoria during World War II and its aftermath. She graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1952, then worked for five years while saving up to 'go abroad' in 1958. By then she was twenty seven.

After returning to Australia in 1960, she taught English at the new Monash University for several years. In the 1980s and 1990s she had a successful career as a children's author, publishing seven novels for young people as well as a memoir of her own childhood, Beside the Lake.

The lively diaries of her 'gap years' in 1958-60 have been lying in her filing cabinet for fifty years. In the light of all that has happened since, she has now decided to give them new life.
