By Colleen Grundy Colleen Grundy explores the once-taboo subject of homosexuality with sensitivity and grace. The main characters in this fictional story are professional women who have developed long-term relationships with their women lovers. But this is not just a story about relationships. Grundy¹s work is also the story of a strong woman who stood up for her beliefs and as a consequence put her life in danger as she took on big money and politics to stop mining in the oceans of Western Australia. The book is a mix of flashbacks telling the story of each generation of women all of whom their lives connected. In telling the story, Grundy demonstrates that lesbian lovers experience the same love and angst as heterosexual couples. The story begins with the dying breaths of one of the main characters, Samantha (the activist), as her lifetime lover, Kerry, (the police officer) relates their life together to doctor Jocelyn (who is developing a relationship with policewoman Pauline). A Matter of Course is about life and death, family, the intricate networks we forge in our lives and what we leave behind. - Wendy O¹Hanlon Sunshine Coast Weekender.
